When God Answers in His Time: The Story of Prayer Hill

At the heart of Wolmyeongdong lies a slope known as the Prayer Hill. It rises behind the sports field, framed by pine trees and stones. At its side is a path paved in white. Its beauty is quiet, speaking through what it has become – a place shaped by steady devotion over time.
This is the place where Pastor Jung Myeong Seok first began praying in the mountains starting at the age of twelve, and where the journey of faith began.
This unremarkable hill, which didn’t seem like much at first, was later found to be a central part of many meaningful features—including a pine tree where Pastor Jung often prayed as a young boy, calling out to Jesus for someone’s faith to come alive.
Although the hill held many stories of earnest prayer, it originally belonged to others. The process of developing Wolmyeongdong and buying the land surrounding the Prayer Hill was a long and tedious one, full of delays and disappointments. Pastor Jung and his team spent years speaking to multiple landowners while continuously praying to God. Through persistent faith and action, the land surrounding the hill was gradually purchased—one piece at a time.
Even after the land was theirs, they still needed official government approval and permits to begin development. It often seemed that when one door opened, another would close, and all Pastor Jung could do was continue praying and petitioning in faith.
In total, it took sixteen long years before the government finally granted official approval for the development. With that, the construction of the prayer hill officially began.
Jung Myeong Seok“I thought, “I'm trying to build God's temple but why is it not working out? Is it not good in God's eyes? Since we're going to use it, is He helping us only a little bit and leaving the rest up to us?”
God’s Answer to Prayer at the right timing
Even with permission granted, the question remained: how could something truly meaningful be built here? While praying with this question in mind, Pastor Jung received a strong inspiration:
“With huge boulders, make it magnificent.” However, at that time, such large rocks were difficult to find.
One day, a member whose father owned a mining company asked if Pastor Jung needed large rocks for the development of Wolmyeongdong. Through this connection, Pastor Jung was able to obtain boulders of remarkable size—enough to begin building the foundation of Prayer Hill.
He then realized that the moments when he misunderstood God and questioned the years of delay were because of this very reason.
Jung Myeong Seok“I found out later that if the permission had been granted earlier, I wouldn’t have been able to build it with the best rocks that came out much later, and I would have had to finish the construction with ordinary stones. If we had done that, it wouldn’t have looked as beautiful. Because of God’s will, He made us obtain permission later.”
Unlike other parts of Wolmyeongdong, which are solid and rocky, the Prayer Hill is composed of soft red soil, making construction challenging. To ensure everyone’s safety, Pastor Jung and his team carefully laid stepping stones along the slope and added benches and rest areas, providing visitors with peaceful places to pray.
Even the nearby spring has its own story. Initially, the water was murky, but after many prayers, Pastor Jung was guided to drill five meters deeper through the rock beneath the ground. From that depth, a spring emerged, now supplying clean water for thousands.
There were no shortcuts. Every detail demanded thoughtful effort and labor, sometimes accompanied by years of prayer. True to its name, earnest and devoted prayer was fundamental to its transformation.

The transformation of the Prayer Hill speaks to each of us, showing that the same is true for our own hill, our own life, and what can become of it when we tend to it daily with dedication, faith, and prayer.
