Among the many treasures in Wolmyeongdong, one tree draws the eye with its bold, dragon-like trunk and sculptural presence: The Masterpiece Pine Tree of Struggle. With limbs that twist like a coiled serpent reaching toward the sky, it stands as a natural sculpture, raw yet refined. Even seasoned landscape experts have stopped in awe, drawn by the artistry nature formed over decades. Many offered large sums for it, captivated by its beauty. But it was never for sale. This tree was never meant to belong to anyone but God.
Even after the land was theirs, they still needed official government approval and permits to begin development. It often seemed that when one door opened, another would close, and all Pastor Jung could do was continue praying and petitioning in faith.
In total, it took sixteen long years before the government finally granted official approval for the development. With that, the construction of the prayer hill officially began.
A Father’s Devotion, A Son’s Promise
This pine tree once grew under the loving care of Elder Lim Se-young and his wife. For many years, Elder Lim tended to this tree with quiet commitment. Though he received numerous offers to sell it, he always declined. It wasn’t just a tree; it was part of his life, nurtured through the changing seasons.
However, in a moment of generosity, Elder Lim once promised the tree to a friend who had helped him in the past. Though he had never agreed to let the tree go before, he felt compelled to repay the kindness he had received. That promise, however, would go unfulfilled. One winter, a thick layer of snow caused one of the tree’s major branches to snap. At that moment, Elder Lim received a clear inspiration that he should continue to keep the tree.
Uncertain but obedient, Elder Lim reconsidered. Around that time, he reached out to Pastor Jung, wondering if perhaps the tree belonged somewhere else entirely…in Wolmyeongdong?
What Pastor Jung revealed astonished him: Elder Lim’s son had previously made a promise to donate this very tree to Wolmyeongdong. Without either of them knowing, the son’s promise and the father’s obedience were now converging into one act of fulfillment—guided not by human planning, but by God’s hidden orchestration.
Delivered by the Owner of All Things
On Arbor Day in the spring of 2007, the Masterpiece Pine Tree of Struggle made its final journey. Carefully transported and planted near the Blue-Tiled Roof House in Wolmyeongdong. It had found its place: not just in the landscape, but in the living story of God’s Providence.
Looking back, Pastor Jung would reflect on this event and realize: “Everything was God’s will.” Even when they acted without knowing the full meaning, God was already working behind the scenes: setting the conditions, aligning the timing, and protecting the promise. From the broken branch to the revived memory of a forgotten promise, each moment was held in divine hands.
This was not just the planting of a tree. It was the revelation of a lesson: that what is grown in obedience, even through hardship, will one day be used for something greater than we can imagine. As you look at this tree, think also about your own journey and how God was always there, quietly leading you.
A Living Testament to Struggle and Mastery
The Masterpiece Pine Tree of Struggle did not reach its beauty without enduring difficulty. The family cared for it through the seasons so that the tree, instead of growing straight, twisted, turned, and became even more magnificent.
It mirrors our own journey of faith.
Just like this tree, our lives rarely follow a straight, predictable path. There are seasons of waiting. Times when we feel broken. Moments when our efforts seem unseen. But as long as we keep growing—twisting, reaching, enduring—God is crafting us into a masterpiece, often without us even knowing it.
This tree reminds us that struggle is not something to avoid, but something to overcome. In God’s hands, even our detours and delays become part of His design, so that we become stronger - to do great things for God.
God knew this tree’s path long before any human did. And in the same way, He knows the path of every person who comes here to seek Him.
We too must become our own masterpiece—formed through struggle, shaped by faith, and made beautiful in God’s hands.
