As you walk toward the sports field in Wolmyeongdong, one of the first things that greets you is a tall, strong pine tree, standing proudly by the hillside. It is not just any tree. It spans an arms’ length and is masterfully shaped, its branches stretching evenly toward the east, west, south, and north. Symmetrical, balanced, and dignified, it gives the impression of something deliberately placed; a natural sculpture that commands quiet attention.
But what makes this tree truly remarkable is not just its shape or size. It is the fact that it even stands at all.
From Grave to Garden
Years ago, this pine tree was rooted to a very different place: near a grave. At the time, Pastor Jung was looking for a tree to complete a rock landscape in Wolmyeongdong. He had seen many trees before, but as he was thinking through possibilities, this particular pine tree came vividly to mind. There was something about it—its shape, its spirit—that made him feel it belonged in Wolmyeongdong.
But there was also urgency. Pastor Jung had a strong impression that the tree was in danger. Its roots had started to stretch into the nearby grave, and the grave’s owner was likely going to cut it down. Alarmed by this thought, Pastor Jung gave another member a clear and immediate instruction: “Go now. Mark it. Put up a sign that says ‘Protected Tree.’ Do it right away. If we lose this, there’s nothing more we can do.”
Not long after, the grave’s owner came to Wolmyeongdong. He had seen the sign and wanted to know if it had been placed by someone from there. The disciple confirmed it and explained that they were planning to move the tree to Wolmyeongdong.
The grave’s owner then shared that he had indeed been planning to cut it down. A few days earlier, he had gone to the grave and saw that the tree’s roots were creeping in. But due to a busy schedule, he had postponed the task. When he returned to cut it, the sign was already there. Because of the sign, the owner eventually left the tree alone.
Hearing that the tree would be removed, the owner readily agreed to let them take it. Still, the tree was large, and any rushed attempt to dig it up would risk killing it. So they suggested a method that would allow it to survive: trim the roots gently first, wait until new shoots grew, and then move it.
The owner agreed. And so, the process began, slow, careful, and deliberate. It would take two years before the tree was finally planted in its new home.
Heaven’s Timing, Earth’s Response
The moment between the owner’s decision to cut the tree and the placement of the sign was razor-thin. Any delay, any hesitation, and the pine tree would have been lost forever. But God knew. God had already seen the intention in the owner’s heart, and so the instruction came swiftly: mark the tree. Protect it. Save it.
That quiet yet urgent inspiration, spoken through God and acted on without delay, became the difference between life and death. If they had hesitated even a day, there would have been nothing left to rescue.
In hindsight, what felt like a rush of urgency was actually divine precision. All of it unfolded under Heaven’s direction.
A Reminder of Life
Today, the tree stands fully grown and flourishing in Wolmyeongdong—not just a survivor, but a living symbol of rescue and renewal. It welcomes each season, its branches evenly outstretched in all directions, like arms embracing the world. It stands not because of chance, but because of swift obedience to divine inspiration.
And this is the quiet message it whispers to everyone who passes by: you are saved because someone heard God and acted.
Just like this pine tree, there are moments when God will urgently call out to save us. He may inspire someone to cover you, protect you, and rescue you from the brink. It is not always dramatic. Sometimes, it is as simple as a sign placed in time.
Pastor Jung teaches that this tree testifies about the importance of moving when heaven speaks. Especially when the matter concerns life. There is a difference between inspiration and transformation, and that difference is whether or not we act on what we hear. When God inspires, it is not just to comfort but to move. To protect. To deliver.
God delivers when we pray. This tree was saved not through strategy or persuasion, but through an earnest prayer and a swift response. When we lift our desires to God with sincerity, and when we are ready to act the moment He gives direction, the results can be life-giving. What may seem small, like putting up a sign, can end up preserving something irreplaceable. And in so doing, it becomes a blessing for generations to come.
Now fully rooted in Wolmyeongdong, this pine tree is not just another element of landscape design. It is a living testimony that God’s timing is never late, that His inspiration is precise, and that when we follow without delay, what seemed destined for loss can flourish once more.
