Tucked away in a quiet part of Wolmyeongdong, there is a tree that has captured the curiosity of all who pass by. It is not the tallest tree in the valley, nor the most outwardly majestic. Rather, what makes it remarkable lies in the ground: its roots.
At first glance, the roots seem like a tangled mess. But look closer, and you begin to see the shape and strength they hold. The width of the roots span almost 2 ft. They spread outward in every direction: north, south, east, and west – thick and powerful like the trunk itself. Some twist around one another, some run deep, others stretch wide. Together, they form a natural sculpture, full of movement and grace.
Even experts acknowledge the majesty of these roots; the sheer size, symmetry, and artistry make it unlike anything they’ve encountered. To them, this tree is priceless. But its story, and what it represents, is what truly gives it value.
Discovered through Inspiration
For years, the tree stood unnoticed. It blended into the background, surrounded by other trees, covered by foliage – no one gave it a second thought.
One day, Pastor Jung was inspired to go for a run. Seize this sliver of time to go jogging. You need to be healthy, then you can handle the work of God. Was the inspiration that came. So, he jogged, winding through a path that so many had passed by before. Halfway into his run, he felt a prompting in his heart to stop and clean up the area. After cleaning, he realised that he had found a masterpiece: the Masterpiece Root Pine Tree.
It wasn’t planned. It wasn’t searched for. It was revealed.
As he gently brushed the dirt from around the tree, the roots began to show. They extended further than expected, thick and strong, like arms reaching into the earth. The more he cleared, the more their shape and beauty came into view.
What was hidden in plain sight now lay uncovered by God.
Preserved by Grace
This tree wasn’t here by chance. Years ago, a fire had broken out near the area. Several nearby trees were damaged or destroyed, but this one remained untouched. Later, Pastor Jung also realised that its roots had grown large because of the unique way it clung to a rock underground and because it had received just enough sunlight in the right place.
The roots are not only strong; they also contain distinct images. Look closely, and you can see a frog mid-leap. From the same angle, you may also glimpse a human figure mimicking the frog’s motion. Still, from other angles, the shape of the frog disappears, replaced by an image of a person with both knees bent, sitting comfortably in an upright posture. All these, from one tree.
None of this was by human design.
It had grown, quietly and steadily, shaped by conditions beyond man’s control. God raised and protected this tree, and then revealed it centuries later.
A Reminder of Strength
The roots grew large because they had something to hold onto; a rock beneath them that gave them resistance, and in that resistance, they grew stronger.

Like the tree, it is in times of hardship when we grow. In difficulties, we stagnate, struggle, and doubt. Yet it is in those very seasons that something deeper is forming. Many people walk through difficulties and wonder if anything is changing. But like this tree, much of what grows does so out of sight.
This growth comes when we cling to God. People whose hearts are like a fertile field lay down deep roots of faith that extend widely no matter what environment they’re in.

Those who cling to God through their struggles become a masterpiece. The roots of character, faith, and strength often develop when life feels uncertain or buried under pressure.
The Masterpiece Root Pine Tree stands as a vivid reminder: struggling is not defeat. It’s part of becoming. It stands as an example of how transformation works, not in grand gestures, but through steady growth and unexpected discovery.
The root masterpiece wasn’t created overnight nor was it created without struggle. And neither are we.
As you walk past this tree in Wolmyeongdong, take a moment to pause. Notice the way its roots fan out. Notice how firmly they cling to the earth. Notice how far they’ve come from where they began. Then think about your own story.
You may be in a season where things feel hidden or hard. But, like the Masterpiece Root Pine Tree, the artwork of you is something only time and God, together with you, can reveal. Keep going; keep growing. Others may not see, but God knows everything – your struggles, tears, and effort. The work that may be unseen today will become a testimony tomorrow.
