How to Landscape: Foundation and Rocks

How to landscape!

Learn the principles behind landscaping on any scale by watching how we created the best landscapes in Korea! We originally had outside help, but after we learned how to do it ourselves, we did everything ourselves!

To date, we have built four landscapes in Wolmyeongdong, but this video focuses on the rock landscape next to our courtyard. We started construction on August 9, 2015 and finished it a little more than a year and a half later. You can see the before and after pictures in the video! It’s completely different!

1. Collect more rocks than you need

The hardest part was finding enough rocks for the landscape. I don’t think many of you will be facing that problem, but one tip I do recommend is getting more than you think you will need. It’ll save a lot of time and hassle later, especially if you are dealing with huge rocks.

2. Create a good foundation

After we collected everything we needed, we make the ground flat for the foundation. We also created a gutter that marked the length of the rock landscape. Actually, there used to be an office in front of the mountain, but we tore it down before beginning the construction. There were much more trees as well, but we cleared them away to make room for the landscape.

Although we didn’t know where each rock was going to go beforehand, we were able to get a rough idea of how the landscape would turn out by measuring the rocks and gauging where things could go. The end result was much different from what we expected, but I think that is part of the process.

3. Measure everything beforehand

I think it turned out better, but to avoid making mistakes and having to redo things, it’s best to measure everything that needs to be measured. Then when you make the design, then you’ll have more accurate plans to work off of.
